First-Generation

It’s commonplace to hear talks of first-generation college graduates; deservedly, crowds swell with applause… celebrating their breakthrough. Yet hushed into the silence of crowded elevators or fused into the tempo of bustling cafés, are first-generation peacemakers, joy chasers, and trailblazers.

These are those whose families of origin lack the capacity to guide and support them, often reined by impoverished networks but suited with perseverance. You’ve met these people… they’re stoic with tempered charisma, their confidence is rooted in evidential resolve, their words flow like embers igniting everyone in earshot.

These are first-generation lovers, who sink so deeply into a love deemed exemplary. Love that springs wynter* into rays of summer’s warmth. (Love) where onlookers can only try to calculate its magic through exponents of luck, but only their hearts fully understand the commitment to resurrecting their entire bloodline through gentleness and passion, stillness and adventure, affirmation and oneness.

These are first-generation professionals who could, if given a chance, absolutely revolutionize existing systems (typically their presence is too riveting, triggering unbridled egoism). You see them every day, submitting to the temptation to fade into the background until serendipity beckons.

A reminder to all first-generation courageous, first-generation driven, first-generation survivor, first-generation sober… you have everything that it takes to thrive. You’ve married “street smarts” with “book smarts”; do away with the chameleonic regime and follow your inner guidance.

The mentor may never come, but you have a track record of landing on your feet (trust your instincts)!

Better first than never!

xx, Kayla
